Over its four-year life, the group became mainstays on the DJ Magazine Top 100 DJ list, pumping out festival-ready hits like the memorable “Miami 2 Ibiza” and “Save The World” and working with everyone from Coldplay to Pharrell. Brenda talks about the inspiration that drove her to write hit songs like "Get Here" and "Piano in the Dark," and why a lack of formal music training can be a songwriter's best asset. Swedish House Mafia and the Weeknd performed "Moth to a Flame" at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on 17 April 2022.[17] Starting on June 10, 2023, "Moth to a Flame" served as the closing track for the Weeknd's After Hours til Dawn Tour. Puff Daddy didn't get permission to sample the Police song "Every Breath You Take" on his Notorious B.I.G. tribute "I'll Be Missing You," but he later reached an agreement and even performed the song with Sting. In January 2024, Tomorrowland announced Swedish House Mafia will be performing at the 20 year anniversary festival called Life.

As if Swedish House Mafia weren’t enough of a super-group already, the trio united with Dutch DJ Laidback Luke and vocal powerhouse Deborah Cox for this progressive house treat. Here, booming piano chords and a frantic beat underline Cox’s heavy, soulful singing as she urges listeners to “surrender yourself to the rhythm.” The track also serves at the title for SHM’s 2014 documentary, which followed their final tour before dissolving the group for good. All this made it a major heartbreak for the dance community when the group announced their intentions to split in 2012, officially signing off after the last concert of their “One Last Tour” at the 2013 edition of Miami’s Ultra Music Festival. Thankfully, though, the Swedish beatsmiths left behind enough material for fans to feed off of long after the group’s final set. The album’s third single, “Moth To A Flame,” featuring The Weeknd, was released on October 22, 2021, three months after the second single’s release. As dance super-groups go, it’s hard to outdo Swedish House Mafia, the progressive house trio made up of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso.

Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" was co-written by Sarah Hudson, who is a singer-songwriter and a member of the Pop group Ultraviolet Sound. Though Sarah isn't related to Katy (whose real name is Katy Hudson), she is the first cousin of another famous person with the same name, the actress Kate Hudson. The group also performed at the opening ceremony of the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup on 12 December 2023 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

In 2022, the group also received credit for co-writing and co-producing "Sacrifice" and "How Do I Make You Love Me?" off of the Weeknd's fifth studio album Dawn FM, on which 'Moth to a Flame' was featured on the Alternate World edition of the album. On April 7, 2022, Swedish House Mafia revealed the official tracklist to the album, consisting of 17 tracks in total, with features ranging from Mapei, A$AP Rocky, Sting, and many more, alongside the ones previously mentioned. While Swedish House Mafia’s remix of this Coldplay smash isn’t an SHM song per se, we couldn’t stand leaving it off our list completely.

Most recently, they released "Bodycrash" under their Buy Now alias, sampling the 1978 disco hit "Let's All Chant" by the Michael Zager group. Eventually, the Dirty South remix of the tune leaked out onto the Internet in January 2008. The track has since received a much larger release via Positiva Records, also including the Laidback Luke remix. He has produced with Eric Prydz under the name A&P Project. Also, he has created a track with his friend Axwell under the name Supermongo, later renamed Supermode. This was released via Ministry of Sound's Data Records imprint in summer 2006.Steve Angello's productions can mainly be classified as house ("Summer Noize"), progressive house ("Yeah"), tech house ("Partouze") and electro house ("Raining Again"). He has co-written and co-produced the track "Cupid Boy" on the Kylie Minogue album Aphrodite along with Magnus Lidehäll, Nick Clow and Luciana Caporaso. Ingrosso has also produced tracks for Lazee ("Rock Away") and Kid Sister ("Right Hand Hi" with Steve Angello). Remixed artists during the years include Justin Timberlake, Moby, Röyksopp, Hard-Fi and Deep Dish. In 2012, Sebastian Ingrosso released his early summer anthem of 2011 "Calling" with Alesso. The following year, a vocal version of the anthem was released in August featuring Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, titled Calling (Lose My Mind). His latest single with Tommy Trash, "Reload", was released in 2012, and then a vocal version featuring John Martin in June 2013.

Our number two pick is one of Swedish House Mafia’s best collaborations yet — but not with another artist. This surging, progressive house track and its futuristic music video were released in partnership with vodka brand Absolut to promote its “Absolut Greyhound” drink. The track hit No. 3 on the Dance Club Songs charts with its smoldering, hypnotic dance beat and shimmery, metallic drop. Don’t forget that Swedish House Mafia hit the dance jackpot with their very first single, “One,” featuring none other than Pharrell. The track bolted to No. 3 on the Dance Club Songs charts, thanks to its thudding, descending synth line, trance-like wooshes and Pharrell’s soulful vocal interjections.

Swedish House Mafia take the dance leanings of “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” — particularly, the euphoric keys underneath the chorus — one step further, layering on shattering synths, ample percussion and a blissful new hook. English rapper Tinie Tempah brings the lyrical fire to this club dance floor jam, spitting catchy, clever verses that play on everything from FIFA to Calvin Klein and Playboy bunnies while Swedish House Mafia provides a trance-tinged chorus as backdrop. Seven years later, this one still bangs — in fact, if it wasn’t for the song’s dated references to Blackberry cell phones, we’d say it hasn’t aged at all. A talk with Martin Popoff about his latest book on Rush and how he assessed the thousands of albums he reviewed.

Steve Angello (born 22 November 1982) placed at number 23 on the DJ Magazine Top 100 DJ Poll 2011.[157] Steve Angello's claim to fame came when he released his remix of Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams" in late 2004. He often works closely with his childhood friend Sebastian Ingrosso on many projects. Aside from DJing together, they have also produced under the names Buy Now, Fireflies, General Moders, Mode Hookers, Outfunk, and The Sinners.

About two months after their dash to Las Vegas, the Stahls decided to drive up to this mystery spot and have a look around. They found themselves gawping at the entirety of Los Angeles spread out below in a grid that went on for an eternity or two.

The rose beds were put in c.1935, and the present layout of the shrubbery was designed by Mrs Janet Dick-Cunyngham in the 1960s. A fabulous quirky characterful hotel with lovely staff and excellent food. “When I built in steel, what you saw was what you got,” the plain-spoken Koenig once said. What Buck and Carlotta Stahl got when they drove up to Woods Drive in 1954 was more than they ever envisioned. “They simply built their dream home,” their children write. The house in 1960, as captured by Julius Shulman during the day. In March 1954, Clarence “Buck” Stahl and Carlotta May Gates drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and got married in a chapel.

Featuring an expansive rooftop garden and a fireplace-adorned bar called the Snug, the stylish hotel definitely appeals to modern travelers. Sleek rooms flaunt city views, cloud-like beds and bathrooms with underfloor heating to keep toes toasty on cold days. Prestonfield House, possibly designed by Robert Mylne in 1687, has twin gable ends, with curved gables, linked with a balcony across the west entrance. A detailed Roman Doric porte cochere is a later addition. The circular stables were built around 1816 by James Gillespie Graham for Sir Robert Dick and have been converted to a restaurant/function suite; they are listed B.

We are a five minute taxi ride from Edinburgh's main Waverley station. There are frequent services on the East Coast main line and services from London in just over 4 hours. A new kitchen garden had been put in south of the house at the end of the south-east avenue, and a new south drive had been made to Clearburn Lodge. The tree planting around the circular design had also been thickened up to form more of a feature, and possibly to provide more shelter. The bowling green is also shown to the south-east of the house. By 1910 and the 2nd edition OS map, the southern kitchen garden had also become disused, but the structure of the designed landscape was laid out the same as it is today. Prestonfield House is a fantastic dining option for those looking to retreat from the city centre while enjoying the festive atmosphere in all its glory. You will find us just minutes from Edinburgh's Old Town, Waverley railway station, the city’s finest shopping streets, and the historic attractions of the Royal Mile.

While they stood there, the owner of the lot rolled up. In the kismet-filled conversation that followed, Buck agreed to buy the barren one-eighth-acre lot for $13,500, with $100 down and the seller maintaining the mortgage until the Stahls paid it off. On that site, they would construct Case Study House #22, designed by Pierre Koenig, arguably the most famous of all the houses in the famous Case Study program that Arts & Architecture magazine initiated in 1945.

Final Line-up Set For The Fringe at Prestonfield, Edinburgh

A landmark with stories to tell, the InterContinental Edinburgh The George, an IHG Hotel, channels the splendor and majesty of a bygone era without being stuck in the past. Don’t worry about missing out on the more customary Scottish touches — the concierge still dons a kilt. There is a formal design layout by William Walker in 1764 and there are some survey plans of the estate in 1817 & 1825, carried out by William Crawford. Tuck into the Prestonfield House Edinburgh, a boutiqueproperty that looks as if it could have served as a setting in a Jane Austennovel. Each room boosts beautiful antiques, rich brocade fabrics, textured wallpaper, soft lighting and bespoke furniture. Even the 20 acres of surroundingland offer surprises at every turn, be it with a beautiful statue, an 18-holegolf course or the elegant topiary.

The top spots to stay in the Scottish capital have heaps of character and charm

To the north of the house there are some herbaceous beds extending northwards to the stables and a rosebed surrounds the sundial. A formal pattern of flowerbeds, divided into eight compartments, is currently being replanted. The terrace garden to the south of the house was put in during the first half of the 19th century when the Dutch Garden was removed. A bowling green was originally laid out on the terrace, and steps lead down from it to the south park.

Catherine Zeta Jones, Elton John, and Sean Connery partied until dawn broke. The only woodlands at Prestonfield are the shelterbelts, originally put in by Sir James Dick at the end of the 17th century, and interplanted in the early 19th century by Sir Robert Dick. Species include sycamore, elm, beech and lime, with a holly and elder understorey.

The new house incorporated a little of the former tower, and was built in a domestic style. The initials SJD and DAP, (for his wife Dame Anne Paterson) are carved above the upper windows. Sir James improved his lands to the extent that he recorded selling surplus produce from his vegetable garden.

In the early 19th century, Sir Robert Keith Dick built a new circular block of stables on the site of the old Dutch Garden and turned the remnants of the garden into grazing land for his stud horses. The new kitchen garden was put in to the south of the house, and the old one put to grass. The Bacchus was relocated in the 1880s, having resided in the stables for the previous three generations. Sir Robert extended the house at about the same time, building on the two oval rooms on the south facade, and adding the portico.

Shulman’s famous seven-minute exposure captures the house and its sprawling city backdrop. Sir Alexander kept company with some of the most astute thinkers and creatives of his time—and opened the doors of Prestonfield to a plethora of admirable guests. These included Benjamin Franklin, David Hume, Dr Samuel Johnson, and artist Allan Ramsey. It was Sir Alexander’s trip to Italy with Allan Ramsay that inspired him to commission the painting of Italian style landscapes to dine beneath at Prestonfield. Although, he is equally remembered for being the keen horticulturalist that introduced rhubarb to Scotland. Upon assuming ownership of the estate and baronetcy from his brother, Alexander Cunyngnham changed his surname to Dick, becoming Sir Alexander Dick.

Verified reviews from real guests.

The site of the former kitchen gardens are now grassed over. Prestonfield House is situated within the historic boundaries of the City of Edinburgh, and within 2 miles (3km) of the city centre. It lies to the south side of Holyrood Park which forms a dramatic feature in the view from the house, with 'Samson's Ribs' prominent from this south side. Duddingston Loch lies on the north-east boundary of the designed landscape and has been a bird sanctuary since 1928. The site is bounded by minor roads, and by the golf course to the north and east. The western boundary has gradually become built up and has been described in the past as a 'bungalow colony'.

General Roy's map of 1750 shows the designed landscape extending further westwards than today, with a long west drive and a shorter south-east drive. The circular structure of planting around the house existed at that date but was formed by only one line of planting. There is no sign in 1750 of the formal garden layout drawn in 1764 by William Walker. A plan of 1817 shows the layout substantially the same as it is today, with its new drive to the north-west, and the new circular stable buildings to the north of the house. The kitchen garden at that date lay to the north-west of the stables and was also roughly circular in form. A small pond is shown to the north of the kitchen garden, and a small burn is shown diverted through the south park and broadening out with an ornamental pond due south of the house.

This has now been left as lawn, and shrub beds were planted to the south of the house by Mrs Janet Dick-Cunyngham in the 1960s. The remains of the walls of a gazebo were discovered here adjacent to the house. The stone seats, the Sphinx and the Bacchus fountain are all features of this garden. The structure of a late-18th- and early-19th-century designed landscape survives at Prestonfield House. The estate used to incorporate Duddingston Loch and the current golf course.

There has been some more recent planting; the west drive was interplanted in 1920 by Sir William Stuart Dick- Cunyngham, with horse chestnut, beech, sycamore and lime. There are also some fine old parkland trees in the policies, particularly the old sycamores and yew near the house. A lot of the original furnishings deck the hotel’s historicpublic areas, including the Leather Room, Yellow Room, Tapestry Room and WhiskyRoom, an aptly named space where you can indeed indulge in a fine glass ofscotch. Directions from the WestJoin the Edinburgh A720 City Bypass and proceed to the Straiton exit, signposted Peebles/Edinburgh city centre, following signs to city centre. Eventually, you'll pass the Mortonhall crematorium on your left, and quite some way ahead on the right you'll see the Cameron Toll shopping centre. Take the right hand lane, proceeding past the front of the centre.

The estate was converted for use as a hotel in the 1960s and, in 2003, the hotel was bought by restaurateur James Thomson. The house remained the home of the Dick baronets for many centuries. Uncover our exclusive offers and relish a dash of opulence at our five-star estate in the heart of Edinburgh.

It’s home to a fairytale hilltop castle that holds the crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, as well as the atmospheric Old Town with cobbled lanes, stores selling tartan kilts and lively pubs. The accommodations enchant travelers in equal measure, with a mix of historic grand dames and captivating newcomers. Scenically and architecturally outstanding, the designed landscape at Prestonfield House dates from the late 18th/early 19th century. Although somewhat degraded today, the structure is still evident. Charlotte Wells On Her Feature Debut 'Aftersun': 'It Became Personal'

charlotte wells' father

If they want to, they’ll overlook the character’s every positive action in favor of arriving at that interpretation. I occasionally see Aftersun being described as a story of an estranged father and daughter. I don’t know what more I could’ve done to convince them otherwise. Perhaps there’s no winning for people who want to see a positive depiction of fathers. As an adult and a mother, Sophie now knew what it was to be a parent.

Cannes Classics To Screen Tsui Hark's 'Shanghai Blues' Restoration

Charlotte Wells might have heard me weeping at the premiere of her film. “There was someone behind me crying quite audibly,” says the Scottish director, who was still putting the finishing touches to her feature debut, Aftersun, when it crash-landed at Cannes back in May. She’s been forced to play grief counsellor to scores of traumatised viewers ever since. I have a torso on an hour’s worth of digital video playing chess. All of our heads are framed out of screen because the chess board is more interesting. My generation has more than the generation before, and this current generation record more than ever.

Aftersun charts the exquisite, bittersweet journey of seeing a parent as their own person.

'Awards Chatter' Pod: Anna Sawai, Breakout Star of 'Shogun,' on Lady Mariko, 'F9' Family and J-Pop Days

If we’re lucky to grow up with parents or close guardians, we build our portraits of them first in broad strokes of primary color. They’re defined in relation to us; they’re the most important adults in our still-small world. We stop depending on them; we grow up—maybe even face some of the same challenges they did. And yet, envisioning who they were without us can still be difficult. Another moment from the Jubilee celebrations saw Charlotte encourage her little brother to stop waving as they headed to Horse Guards Parade for Trooping the Colour. Louis was very excited to greet members of the public from their carriage but was interrupted by his elder sister, who pushed his hand down as his excitable waves peaked in speed.

Film

But that’s the kind of question that will become informed by every viewer’s own life experience. Wells, who has received a DGA nomination for first-time feature directing, crafted an intimate yet ambitious memory film about a young father and his daughter making the most of their shared time together. “Be gentle with me,” she seemed to be saying, but a little under two hours later it was the rest of us that needed support, the audience rising unsteadily to its feet for a two-minute standing ovation. It was like a meteor had smashed in through the roof and landed square in my lap, all glowing embers of grief I didn’t know what to do with.

Explaining the ending of Charlotte Wells' 'Aftersun'.

Posted: Wed, 08 Mar 2023 08:00:00 GMT [source]

Before starting her career in the film industry as a producer, Wells helped run Digital Orchard, a company specialising in film, finishing images, developing film and digital imaging. Wells was a fellow at the 2020 Sundance Institute Screenwriters and Directors Labs with her feature film debut Aftersun, which premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim. She received many accolades as a breakthrough director and appeared on numerous year-end lists. Aftersun received an Academy Award nomination for Paul Mescal's performance. The above makes it sound like Aftersun is a heartwarming story about family, but it takes an unexpected turn as the film progresses.

It was the only time he could spend all by himself, and with a sense of peace, he swayed to an inaudible rhythm. The father-daughter dynamic was a frequent topic of conversation after her first feature-film debut Aftersun, a film about a father and daughter. 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) goes on summer vacation to a Turkish resort with her father, Calum (Paul Mescal), who lives apart. The two spend happy, precious moments with each other, sometimes conversing awkwardly with a camcorder in one hand. In writing Aftersun, she played back old Mini-DV tapes that her father shot of her, sometimes drawing dialogue from the footage.

So unfolds Tuesday, the first short film by the 35-year-old Scottish filmmaker Charlotte Wells, and one that bears many of the hallmarks found in her shattering feature debut, Aftersun. It, too, radiates with the glow of memory while coursing with an undertow of grief. This scene is juxtaposed with images of adult Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall) seeing her dad dancing at a rave. Then she holds him as the film flashes between child Sophie dancing and holding her father close and adult Sophie holding him so he cannot leave.

She hates that song, she wouldn’t rehearse it, and I had to sing it to try and encourage her to come onstage for the shot. When I saw Aftersun at the Telluride Film Festival, it was the first nice experience I had watching — and it was very clear that there was no need to watch it, perhaps ever again. (Laughs.) I did do a director’s commentary, which was completely surreal, but I don’t count that as watching so much as reliving what was happening beyond the frame. I’ve been speaking about the film so much that it strangely starts to feel like some abstraction that isn’t real.

The look of concern on the mother’s face, and the tone of the school day’s interactions, give a sense of some unspoken loss hanging over the girl. Each detail tugs at you until finally, after the girl has spent the afternoon alone in the dying light of her father’s apartment, her mother arrives to quietly take her home. “Aftersun” is one of those films that lingers long after you have watched it.

Aftersun builds its tension by allowing the audience to slowly see more and more of Calum’s pain, until we watch him break down crying. He could have died due to some of his self-destructive behavior, or his mental health issues could have gotten so bad that he disappeared, never to be seen again. His fate isn’t confirmed, but this is a film about grief and loss, at least one aspect of it. So whatever has happened to Calum, the loving father from the vacation is gone forever. We then see Calum recording her as she boards a plane back to Edinburgh to be with her mother and return to her life.

If the house in question is not more than 50 years, you may get the plan through a realtor. However, sometimes the house in question may have slight variations with what the realtors have. While you can’t use someone else’s blueprints without raising ethical concerns or risking litigation, you can find many affordable (and sometimes free) blueprints online.

They included entire air defense systems, armored vehicles, sophisticated missiles — even Abrams tanks.
